- Byzantine paintings and icons normally included backgrounds of golden/yellow colors, which emitted a holy tone upon the viewer. Halos surround the heads of religious and important figures in the painting, as seen to the left in The Miracle of Loaves and Fishes. Paintings or icons were often composed with rich materials, or an encaustic method.
- Byzantine architecture involved the use of mosaics decorating walls, covering ceilings, and narthexes for decoration as well. Domed ceilings were extremely common in churches and large public buildings. Light was a key figure in buildings, and filled whole entire rooms. Columns and arches were key aspects in buildings, as well as stained glass windows for beautiful decor.
- Byzantine mosaics were one of the most stunning aspects of the ancient culture. beautiful tiles were used to decorate walls, ceilings, and floors of famous locations such as the Mausoleum at Galla Placidia and the Church at Saint Apollinaris. Light was used to reflect off of the tiles to brighten the room in large, open areas. Domed ceilings and arched walls all contained beautiful displays of religious figures, and elegant designs.
